Tornados

When Jackson and I first moved here we saw these large mega phone things on the top of the telephone wire posts. We could not figure out what these mega phones were for. Two of our best ideas were that they broadcast the football games all over town (because football is nearly a religion out here) or maybe they were air raid sirens from World War 2 or the Cold War era. (Can you guess who guessed what?) We didn't learn what they were until I was talking to a friend, who has lived in tornado country before, she informed me they are tornado warning sirens. You may be wondering where this seemingly random post came from, it is because there is a tornado warning here today, I haven't heard the sirens yet. Maybe they just turn them on when it is a really serious warning.

I can only imagine what we would have thought of this siren!

  1. Some of my fondest childhood memories were of my family sitting in our basement waiting for the tornado warnings to stop and the tornado sirens to stop. Next time you're in SLC I'll teach you how to crouch down in tornado safety position :)!

  2. You totally need a NOAA weather radio! I must admit, I'm pretty jealous you are in tornado country. I'd love to see one someday. Just not TOO close though....

  3. Scary! But just think...in one week you will be across the country soaking up the sun in Cali with your fave Owen family members! We can't wait to see you guys soon! PS Luke wants you to bring the Na's/cats!

  4. If you don't know the protocol for your area's tornado siren, the first few times you hear them, it can be a little nerve racking. I don't know Ann Arbor's emergency response but I know Indy's by heart.

Also, I need you email because I have a question to ask you (I can't find my ward directory so I'm hijacking you blog...sorry.)
